Councillors back calls for safer crossing on busy A39 near Premier Inn

A plan to push Somerset Council for a safer pedestrian and cycle crossing near the Premier Inn in Glastonbury has been unanimously backed by town councillors.
The proposal, put forward by Cllr Serena Roney-Dougal and seconded by Cllr Jon Cousins, urges Somerset to install a crossing on the A39, "as near as is legally available" to the roundabout connecting the Milstream estate and Travelodge to the town centre.
Cllr Cousins said: "This enables Beckery residents and visitors staying at the Premier Inn and Travelodge who have to dodge the traffic to get to the centre of Glastonbury on foot or by bike, and it allows Glastonbury residents to access the retail estate – Tesco and other shops – for their shopping."
Cllr Roney-Dougal explained the proposal had come out of a climate emergency meeting and forms part of a wider plan to connect key town sites via a network of multi-user paths. "St Dunstan's House, the Abbey, Morrisons, the Leisure Centre, and through to Bride's Mound – we were suggesting that all the Town Deal Fund projects could be linked," she said.
She added that funding for a feasibility study might be available through the Robert Richards initiative – but only if Somerset Council sees official support from the town council.
Cllr Paul Manning suggested tweaking the wording of the motion, removing the reference to the roundabout itself. "The real need is to have a crossing from the Milstream estate to the Travelodge," he said, warning the original phrasing might be ruled out due to safety concerns.
With no objections and a clear show of hands, the motion passed unanimously.
