A Compton Dundon author and educationalist is on a mission to transform how families approach learning, with the release of her new book, Lights On Learning.

Julia Black, a Master Neurocoach and creator of the Lights On Learning philosophy, has drawn on over 20 years of experience working with children, parents, and educators to create a practical guide for unlocking learning potential. The book focuses on how parents can inspire curiosity and engagement at home, helping children thrive in the classroom and beyond.

The launch comes as recent research from Pearson reveals that 1.5 million children struggle to engage in learning each week. While 70% of students say they enjoy school, 73% admit they find it difficult to stay engaged in lessons.

Julia's approach doesn't call for an overhaul of traditional schooling but instead complements it with tools families can use at home. Central to her method is the Lights On Spectrum, a framework that helps parents identify their child's learning state, ranging from "darkness" (disconnection) to "radiance" (enthusiastic engagement).

Julia explained: "Children who appear disconnected or frustrated often just need someone to understand their thought process. It's about looking beyond behaviour and creating a supportive environment where they can thrive."

The book also introduces neuroscience-backed tools like the WIRE Framework and LEARN Model, designed to promote passion-led learning. Julia encourages parents to model positive behaviours themselves, becoming lifelong learners to inspire their children.

Philip Ball, author and former Nature editor, praised the book, saying: "Julia Black offers a transformative framework for lifelong learning that anyone can adopt."

Julia lives in Compton Dundon, just outside Street, and is a mother of two. She has hosted workshops globally and runs a thriving online community for parents seeking to bring passion-led learning into their homes.

The book, available now for £16.99, combines practical advice, case studies, and reflective exercises, making it an essential guide for parents, carers, and educators.
