Carnival delight for Glastonbury clubs

By Tim Lethaby 16th Jul 2021

Carnival season has kicked in style in Bridgwater. After dire warnings of torrential rain and high winds turned out to be a damp squib the clubs put on a spectacular show, with Meare's Masqueraders creation The Silent Mary (Redemption of the Damned) winning the sought-after Feature Cart Open Class. This astonishing cart featuring doomed sailors on a wrecked pirate ship looks to be set in a titanic tussle with Bridgwaters Gemini club and their Curse of The Kraken, another seafaring entry which has echoes of their legendary Ghost Ship cart. Wick Carnival Club's Prehistoric Steam cart came fourth at Bridgwater.

Glastonbury's Academy of Carnival also put a good showing in and several local walking entries were top of the charts with wins in their classes for Ethan Pickersgill and for Academy of Carnival entries. Glastonbury Tableau club King William's zombie survival themed entry The Inmates came a respectable fourth. The carts come out again on Monday at Burnham on Sea and arrive in Glastonbury on November 16.
