A car meet and burger night will be held this Wednesday (13 August) to raise funds for a new skatepark in Wells.

The event — a collaboration between Silky Media and STAKD — will take place at Coxley (postcode BA5 1RQ). Organisers say £1 from every burger sold on the day will be donated to the Wells Skatepark fund, which aims to build a new, modern facility for wheeled sports in the city.

This will be the third Silky Media car meet, but the first time it has been run as a fundraiser. Bristol-based DJs Templates will provide music, and members of the Wells Skatepark group will be present to raise awareness of the project.

Wells Skatepark was originally built by local skaters, but many of its ramps have now been condemned and removed. The community group behind the rebuild says the existing park is unsafe and too small, forcing many skaters, scooter riders and BMXers to travel to Bath or Bristol.

The proposed new facility, designed in consultation with local riders and built in partnership with Maverick Skateparks, would be a large, inclusive concrete park for all ages and abilities.

The total fundraising target is £500,000, with £75,000 already raised. A £30,000 crowdfunder is currently under way, with just over £10,000 pledged so far. Organisers say every donation helps demonstrate local support to major funders.

The car meet will start in the evening, with organisers encouraging people to bring their vehicles, enjoy food, and find out more about the skatepark project.

Further information about the fundraiser is available via the Wells Skatepark social media channels and crowdfunding page.
