Somerset Wildlife Trust has raised £60,000 in just four weeks to enable it to buy a plot of land at Westhay Moor National Nature Reserve.

The trust had until the end of October to raise the money to buy the land, but almost 1,000 supporters gave money meaning the target was hit a lot earlier than expected, and now extra work can be done there.

A representative from the trust said: "We will now be able to ensure the long-term stability of our wonderful wetland habitats in this very special place and provide safe homes for some of Somerset's most precious wildlife.

"In fact, as we are continuing to receive donations, we will now be able to do even more. At Westhay we are looking to create better paths for visitors, and build dipping platforms and boardwalks, so people who find it difficult to walk can still get to experience its amazing wildlife.

"This money, together with grants we are hoping to secure, will also enable us to do this.

"You can still donate online, alternatively you can donate over the phone by calling 01823 652429 or you can send a cheque made payable to Somerset Wildlife Trust to 34 Wellington Road, Taunton, Somerset, TA1 5AW."
