Storm Bert has unleashed torrential rain and flooding across the UK, with more than 80% of November's average rainfall falling in just 48 hours.
Widespread flooding has left roads submerged, homes evacuated, and drivers facing travel chaos. Motoring experts are now urging vehicle owners to act quickly to safeguard their cars and check their insurance policies for flood damage cover.
Mark Trimbee, CEO of Regtransfers, has issued a stark warning to drivers as floodwaters continue to rise. "Storm Bert has caused chaos across the UK, with heavy rainfall and rising floodwaters creating hazardous conditions for drivers. If you own a car, the best thing you can do is plan ahead. Don't leave your vehicle parked in low-lying areas where it's vulnerable, and never attempt to drive through floodwater – even if it looks shallow," he said.
Trimbee explained that just 30cm of water can make a car float, and the damage caused by water entering the engine or electronics can be catastrophic. "If your vehicle has already been caught in the flood, resist the urge to start it up, as this could cause irreversible damage. Instead, get it checked by a professional before doing anything else. With storms like this becoming more common, it's also worth double-checking your insurance to ensure you're covered for flood-related issues."
Storm Bert's impact is already being compared to the devastating floods of 2019-2020, which caused over £333 million in economic losses across the UK. In Northern Ireland, the current storm has caused millions of pounds in damage to property and infrastructure, while disruptions to Christmas trade are hitting businesses hard.
For vehicle owners, the consequences of flood damage can be severe. While comprehensive insurance typically covers flood damage, drivers with third-party or third-party, fire, and theft policies may not be protected. Even those with comprehensive cover could see claims denied if they attempt to drive through floodwaters, as this is often considered negligent behaviour by insurers.
Trimbee added, "Stay safe, keep an eye on weather alerts, and take precautions now – a little effort could save you a lot of hassle in the long run."
Drivers are being reminded to check their insurance policies and contact their providers if they are unsure about their coverage. Parking in higher ground, avoiding flood-prone routes, and staying informed through weather updates are simple steps motorists can take to minimise the risks.

Storm Bert's unprecedented rainfall has left much of the UK struggling to cope with rising water levels, and the motoring community is no exception. Taking precautions now could save drivers thousands in repair bills and ensure their vehicles are protected against future extreme weather events.
