The Mayor of Glastonbury has praised the efforts of the town's community during the coronavirus crisis.

Speaking after the annual Glastonbury town meeting on Tuesday (May 4), Cllr Jon Cousins said he had been impressed by how the community had come together in these difficult times.

He also said he will continue to press other local authorities to address the root causes of the town's issues.

"Thank you to everyone who came to Glastonbury's Annual Town Meeting," he said.

"It was a great privilege to chair the event and listen to members of our community speak passionately about the amazing response of individuals and groups to the challenges we have faced over this last, extraordinary, year.

"Also, to listen to some of the serious and difficult issues that have directly and negatively impacted on residents' lives – and to have discussed these openly and honestly together; sharing our frustration, disappointment, and heartfelt feelings.

"My fellow town councillors and I have been deeply impressed by the ways Glastonbury's community has come together to rise to the challenges – and we will continue to press for the urgent and long overdue responses from Somerset County Council, Mendip District Council and police to enforce the law and to address the root causes of the problems our community has been facing.

"It has been an honour to serve our community as mayor, and I hope and trust that – as we emerge from lockdown and the restrictions – Glastonbury will flourish."
