Glastonbury Cricket Club youth teams have come to the end of this strange 2020 season with great results for all three youth teams in the local leagues fixtures.

The U10s, managed by youth secretary Chris Twort, were Mid Wessex League Cup Winners last year.

They built on that success this year - playing and winning all four of their fixtures. The team included many new young cricketers, both boys and girls, Toby Wong and Toby Balderson sharing the captaincy.

They recorded wins against Compton House (by 101 runs), Yeovil (by 35 runs), Queen Camel (by 43 runs) and Sparkford (a very exciting last game where they won by just two runs).

All but two of this year's players are young enough to play U10s again next year which is great news for the club.

The U12s, also managed by Chris Twort, originally had seven fixtures scheduled, although only four were played, the other three being rained off during August.

They secured two good wins against North Perrott (by 40 runs) and Yeovil (by 54 runs), but losing to Ilminster by 11 runs and Sparkford CC by 13 runs.

The team was very ably captained by Dan Carter and Wills House, with a couple of talented U12 girls, Helena Carter and Aggie Stephens, in the squad too. Most of this team will go on to play for the U13s next year.

The U13s played three fixtures and won all three, though frustratingly two matches were called off due to rain.

This team was a mixture of U13 boys and U12 girls, and was a great opportunity for the girls to get some quality match experience.

Dave Peck, the club coach, managed the team excellently, always striving to get the most out of his players.

The team secured three strong wins against Huntspill Hawks (by 61 runs), Street Sabres (by 166 runs) and Butleigh Bisons (by 180 runs).

Club chair, Heather Hall, said: "Despite all the challenges of this season, our young cricketers have had the chance to play some good cricket while dodging the August rain.

"Well done to the U10s and U13s who finished the season unbeaten too. None of this would have happened without the hard work of our youth secretary, Chris Twort, who has worked tirelessly to arrange all the fixtures and then manage two teams as well.

"He is truly an unsung hero and the club is extremely grateful to him. Huge thanks must also go to Dave Peck who expertly managed the U13s as well as running all of our popular youth training sessions - seven per week for 11 weeks.

"His dedication and commitment to the youngsters is outstanding. We look forward to a non-lockdown season in 2021 and more successes for Glastonbury Youth."

Glastonbury has a rich history of producing good young talent with the likes of Somerset's Will and Henry Smeed and George Bartlett all coming through the ranks with them.
